Basics of content & metadata retrieval

Sometimes a file cannot be opened. It might be because of a lack of appropriate software, or the software is unavailable for the environment or operating system. The file could also be corrupted, and therefore, it cannot be viewed correctly. In such cases, there are some content parsing applications that can be used. The list below suggests some such programs.

• Apache Tika - One of the most used open source tools for content and metadata retrieval
• Exiftool - Very good alternative for metadata retrieval, especially good with photos
• JHOVE - Used widely by archives to retrieve metadata
